The region can never be described as taking a Band-Aid approach to treating hospital

Two large hospital groups—Florida Hospital and Orlando Regional Healthcare System—exemplify the strength of the region’s medical care. Each has an array of outstanding services and facilities. In addition, HCA Inc. hospitals serves as an important complement in serving the healthcare needs of metro Orlando. Plus, Health Central and Winter Park Cancer Care Center are independent hospitals, and there are numerous emergency medical clinics available throughout the area.

The not-for-profit Orlando Regional Healthcare System consists of eight hospitals. Services encompass primary, secondary and tertiary care, including the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, the region’s only burn unit, the region’s only teaching hospital, and specialty care facilities like the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women. Notably, ORHS saw patients from 22 counties at the trauma center in 2002. Moreover, ORHS has been recognized by such media outlets as U.S. News & World Report as one of the top-50 cardiology hospitals in the nation. Meanwhile, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando developed Central Florida’s first clinic dedicated to brain tumor research and treatment. All totaled, ORHS contains more than 1,800 licensed beds.

With seven hospitals and 14 Centra Care walk-in medical centers, Florida Hospital is one of the largest hospital systems in the country, caring for almost one million patients every year. In fact, Florida Hospital treats more inpatients than any other hospital system in the country. Florida Hospital specializes in a wide range of health services for the entire family, including many nationally and internationally recognized programs in cardiology, cancer, women’s medicine, neurology, diabetes, orthopaedics and rehabilitation. In addition to serving Central Florida residents, Florida Hospital serves as a major tertiary referral hospital throughout the southeastern United States, the Caribbean and South America. For the last four years, Florida Hospital has been recognized as one the best hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World.

HCA Inc. owns Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford and Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee. Nationally, HCA owns or operates nearly 180 acute care, general, and psychiatric hospitals as well as 80 ambulatory surgery centers located primarily in the Southeast. Central Florida Regional, with 226 beds, is the most comprehensive healthcare facility serving West Volusia and Seminole counties. Osceola Regional Medical Center contains 171 beds.

As for the independents, Health Central is a full-service, 171-bed acute care hospital. And the Winter Park Cancer Care Center serves the needs of cancer patients.

Breast cancer

We all know women who have lived with it. Now, you can join the fight against it.

The Sister Study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, is a national study of the environmental, lifestyle and genetic causes of breast cancer. The study focuses on women who do not have breast cancer themselves but may be at increased risk because of their family history. Caring women are needed to get involved by enrolling in this study or telling other women about the study.

You are eligible to join if:

• You have a sister who has had breast cancer

• You are 35 to 74 years old

• You have never had breast cancer yourself

The Sister Study is a way you can help make the future brighter for your daughters, granddaughters, nieces and other generations to come.
